Obama pone fin a un sistema electrónico de mensajes implantado en la isla por la administración Bush. Hasta este lunes, 25 ventanas del quinto piso del edificio de la Sección de Intereses de Washington en La Habana, situado en el paseo marítimo del Malecón, servían de panel para difundir mensajes, noticias y declaraciones políticas que criticaban al Gobierno cubano. Como gesto de los esfuerzos del Gobierno estadounidense para mejorar las relaciones con la isla, Washington ha apagado el sistema electrónico, de 1,5 metros de altura y en funcionamiento desde enero de 2006.

Este dispositivo, que enfureció al ex presidente de Cuba Fidel Castro, ha permanecido desconectado durante la mayor parte del mes de julio y, según diplomáticos occidentales destinados en la Habana, no hay planes de retomar la difusión de mensajes en un futuro próximo. Por su parte, los estadounidenses han dicho a los visitantes que ha habido "dificultades técnicas" con el sistema de mensajería electrónica, que en junio parecía tener problemas.

La desconexión de los cintillos de noticias llega a la par de las medidas del presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, de relajar algunas restricciones impuestas a Cuba poco después que Fidel Castro llegase al poder en 1959. Estados Unidos rompió relaciones diplomáticas con Cuba en 1961, pero desde 1977 ambos países han mantenido Secciones de Intereses en Washington y en La Habana, respectivamente. No obstante, Obama ha dejado claro que mantendrá el embargo económico, que dura ya 47 años, hasta que las autoridades cubanas mejoren su política y los derechos humanos en la isla.

El foro donde Obama hizo este discurso el jueves por la noche era la Asociación Nacional para el Progreso de la Gente de Color (NAACP, en sus siglas en inglés), que celebraba en Nueva York su primer centenario. La NAACP es una gigantesca organización cuyo propósito es el de mantener viva la llama del antirracismo y que actualmente mueve dinero e influencias de considerable magnitud.
En Washington se la considera el lobby negro; siempre ha utilizado la estrategia del chantaje victimista como método de presión y, por lo general, ha apadrinado a figuras que respondían a ese patrón. Desde el principio, no simpatizó con Barack Obama y, de hecho, algunos de los principales miembros de la NAACP apoyaron en un comienzo a Hillary Clinton.
La NAACP representa un modelo gastado y fracasado de entender la igualdad racial como un infinito proceso reivindicativo -al estilo de algunos nacionalismos- en el que las instituciones que denuncian la supuesta injusticia obtienen estatus y poder a cambio de que las víctimas prolonguen su condición de víctimas, en un diabólico círculo vicioso.
Obama quiere poner fin a esa dinámica, y por eso su discurso ante la NAACP tiene doble valor. El presidente norteamericano dijo que los negros tienen que dejar de mirar al Gobierno como su única fuente de recursos, con la ilusión de cobrar una deuda que el pueblo norteamericano cree ya haber pagado con creces.
Asumiendo la filosofía -"el Gobierno no es tu madre, el Gobierno no es tu padre"- del actor Bill Cosby, por cierto criticado y marginado por la NAACP, Obama advirtió que "el Gobierno por sí solo no va a conducir a nuestros hijos hacia la Tierra Prometida".
"El Gobierno tiene que ser una fuerza para proveer oportunidades, sí. El Gobierno tiene que ser una fuerza para proveer igualdad, sí. Pero, en última instancia, somos nosotros los que nos tenemos que labrar nuestro destino día a día".
Sigue habiendo injusticia para los negros, que se ven relegados a la última posición en todas las escalas del bienestar. "El dolor de la discriminación todavía se siente en Estados Unidos", reconoció Obama. Pero eso no justifica, añadió, que los padres negros abandonen a sus hijos -cerca del 70% de los niños no viven en familia- ni los condenen a la desesperanza o a los papeles secundarios en este país.
"Quiero que aspiren a ser científicos e ingenieros, doctores y maestros, no sólo jugadores de baloncesto o raperos. Quiero que aspiren a ser jueces del Tribunal Supremo o presidentes de Estados Unidos", dijo el presidente negro.
Él también estuvo a punto de quedarse en una esquina, recordó. "Mi vida, fácilmente podría haber girado hacia lo peor". Pero contó con una madre que lo empujó y le inculcó la importancia de la educación. Hoy, para los negros, la educación es, según explicó Obama, el arma principal para completar la obra que empezaron Martin Luther King y los titanes de la lucha por los derechos civiles.

Los anillos de crecimiento del tronco reflejan variaciones en el entorno.

Los árboles tienen una clara adaptación al cambio climático, según pone de manifiesto un estudio de la Universidad de Barcelona publicado en la revista Climatic Change. El trabajo, elaborado por Octavi Planells y Emilia Gutiérrez, directora del Grupo de Dendroecología del Departamento de Ecología de la Universidad de Barcelona (UB).

Las conclusiones de esta investigación no sólo tienen implicaciones ecológicas, sino que también tienen repercusiones de cara a la dendroclimatología, al demostrar que las condiciones ambientales que favorecen el crecimiento de los árboles no son siempre las mismas, no son constantes. El estudio muestra una posible fuente de error que se debería tener en cuenta para reconstruir climas pasados, ya que es posible que los anillos de aquellas épocas no reflejen las mismas condiciones ambientales favorables para el crecimiento de los árboles en la actualidad.

Los anillos de crecimiento registran todo tipo de acontecimientos ambientales puntuales (desde incendios a tempestades y plagas) con una precisión anual. De su estudio se encarga la dendroclimatología, disciplina que también permite estudiar periodos climáticos, cambios ambientales y procesos más complejos y difíciles de medir como la evolución del clima. La dendroclimatología establece relaciones entre series dendrocronológicas y series climáticas para describir qué variables atmosféricas favorecen o limitan el crecimiento de árboles en periodos concretos. Una vez identificadas estas relaciones es posible hacer el camino inverso y valorar los fenómenos meteorológicos de épocas pasadas sobre los que no existen registros instrumentales.
La dendrocronología no sólo se aplica en reconstrucciones climáticas, sino también en multitud de otros campos: desde la datación de maderas antiguas de edificios, barcos y obras de arte a estudios geomorfológicos de aludes, desprendimientos o terremotos o estudios de las perturbaciones ambientales sobre los árboles (incendios, plagas, erupciones volcánicas) o del retroceso de los glaciares.

Sin embargo el estudio del tamaño corporal, realizado en agosto de año en año, muestra que los corderos no crecen tanto como hace unos años y que incluso los pequeños que antes no sobrevivían, ahora lo hacen. La interpretación de los investigadores es que los inviernos más cortos y más templados hace que las crías de estas ovejas Soay no necesiten engordar tanto en sus primeros meses de vida como antes -con los inviernos duros- para sobrevivir al invierno y llegar a cumplir un año.

Debido al cambio climático, hay pasto disponible más meses y las condiciones de supervivencia no suponen un reto tan grande como hace unos años. Esto significa que incluso los ejemplares que crecen más despacio tienen la oportunidad de sobrevivir, lo que significa que están predominando en el rebaño ovejas más pequeñas.

A este fenómeno del tamaño medio decreciente de los individuos se suma el llamado 'efecto de la madre joven': las hembras de menor edad son físicamente incapaces de tener crías que sean tan grandes como ellas cuando nacieron. Los científicos no tienen una explicación clara para esto, pero señalan que su efecto es también el contrario del que cabe esperar cuando la selección natural está en acción, es decir, que resulten favorecidos los corderos más grandes.

El efecto del calentamiento se ha identificado ya en centenares de especies, como aves que adelantan su época de cría en primavera porque las temperaturas son más templadas que antes, o plantas que florecen anticipadamente y pierden las hojas más tarde en otoño. Pero la inmensa mayoría de estos cambios son fenotípicos. En muy pocos casos se ha logrado identificar por ahora alguna modificación genética provocada por la respuesta al calentamiento.

El piloto y aventurero suizo Bertrand Piccard ha presentado el primer prototipo del avión solar con el que va a intentar dar la vuelta al mundo sin escalas.

Su objetivo, es llamar la atención sobre la capacidad potencial de las fuentes alternativas de energía.
Si un avión puede volar noche y día sin combustible nadie podrá decir que es imposible hacer lo mismo con los automóviles, la calefacción, el aire acondicionado y los ordenadores.

El prototipo del Solar Impulse tiene 63,40 metros de envergadura, similar a la de un avión Boeing 747 Jumbo, pero pesa lo mismo que un automóvil tipo turismo. Dispone de cuatro motores eléctricos y está diseñado para volar de forma continua, sea de de día o de noche, almacenando parte de la energía producida por sus 24.000 células solares en baterías de alta eficiencia.

Ayer era un sueño. Hoy es un avión. Mañana será el embajador de la energía renovable.

A group of Greenpeace brilliant climbers, on Wednesday 8th of July, hung a banner on Mount Rushmore challenging President Obama to show real leadership on global warming. Which is pretty awesome!

The banner was sixty-five feet high by thirty-five feet wide, features an unfinished portrait of Obama with the message, "America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming."
The banner was hung next to the carved mountain face of Abraham Lincoln. The group of eleven Greenpeace activists were of course arrested and charged with trespassing.
They will due to their braveness and environmental credo spend six months in prison.

Un Erasmus de pesadilla

En su muñeca izquierda luce una pulsera de amuletos turcos. Adriana Espinosa, fue a cursar su último curso de Erasmus en la Universidad de Gaziantep, al sur de Turquía. Pero apenas pudo estar cuatro meses. En enero abandonó el país acusada de dirigir, coordinar y participar en manifestaciones ilegales en apoyo al grupo terrorista PKK (Partido de los trabajadores del Kurdistán). La fiscalía turca pide para ella una condena de un año y medio de cárcel y una multa de 25.000 euros.
Adriana quiere ser periodista internacional."Para integrarme en la cultura me fui a compartir piso con dos chicas kurdas". Con ellas fue a una concentración prokurda organizada por el partido legal DTP, pero que el Gobierno vincula alguna de sus facciones al PKK.
Pero días más tarde, tras hacer un viaje a Siria y volver a su casa, encontró su ropa tirada por el suelo, los muebles abiertos y no estaba su portátil. Adriana fue interrogada en Gaziantep y volvió a Sevilla un par de meses después sin preocuparse más del asunto. Hasta que cuando iba a regresar a Turquía para seguir sus estudios le advirtieron que estaba acusada de propaganda de terrorismo y decidió quedarse en España.
Actualmente lo que más le preocupa es tener libertad para salir de España. Aunque no ha podido terminar la carrera porque tiene siete asignaturas que no le han convalidado, quiere hacer un máster en Berlín...y ojalá vuelva a Turquía, a una Turquìa libre!!!

El Tribunal Supremo de Nueva Delhi termina con la ley colonial que castigaba a los gays hasta con 10 años de prisión. La homosexualidad ya no es un crimen en la capital de India. El Tribunal Supremo de Nueva Delhi revocó la ley del código penal que calificaba el sexo entre personas del mismo sexo como una "ofensa antinatural". Esta ley era una violación a los derechos humanos fundamentales. La comunidad gay india califica el fallo de histórico y lo celebró por todo lo alto en varias ciudades, entre ellas Bombay, Calcuta, Chennai y Bangalore, además de Nueva Delhi.
Era una ley completamente desfasada con la forma de pensar de la India moderna. La sociedad india es todavía extremadamente conservadora en temas como los matrimonios arreglados y las familias extendidas. Es tabú hablar abiertamente de la sexualidad, sin embargo poco a poco va habiendo más discusión, debate y visibilidad al menos en el tema de la homosexualidad. Una prueba es que el pasado 28 de junio desfiles gays recorrieron las calles de cuatro ciudades indias.
La discriminación es antitesis de igualdad. Sólo el reconocimiento de la igualdad promoverá la dignidad de cada individuo.

No es una medida contra las mujeres, ni contra el Islam. Al contrario. Es una mano tendida a ellos. Los Estados europeos, garantes de la laicidad, deben evitar que en las calles se sigan viendo a esos "fantasmas". Esta forma de vestir, de vivir, encierra literalmente el cuerpo y la mente de la mujer, convirtiéndose en un verdadero calabozo ambulante. Constituye una afrenta a la libertad de la mujer y a la afirmación de su feminidad. Crea una situación de reclusión, de exclusión y de humillación intolerable".

El jueves 18 de Junio de 2009, por la noche, Eduardo Puelles se acostó con la sonrisa puesta. Él y su hijo de 16 años, Asier, habían disfrutado de lo lindo con ¡Vaya semanita!, el programa de la televisión vasca que ofrece una semblanza irreverente y desmitificadora de Euskadi. Se metió en la cama diciendo que le encantaba esa serie porque se reían de todos y de todo. Era casi la medianoche y cayó rendido enseguida. Faltaban nueve horas. Su coche estaba aparcado donde siempre, en batería, con el morro sobre la valla quitamiedos, que, precisamente, luce una vieja pintada con esas tres letras siniestras tan familiares para los vascos. A esa hora, los asesinos no habían aparecido todavía por la pequeña explanada que sirve de aparcamiento en el barrio de La Peña, en Bilbao, no habían colocado su carga mortífera en ese ángulo muerto, junto al depósito de gasolina, que queda fuera de la vista en una inspección superficial de los bajos del vehículo.

Es otra Neda pero en tierra vasca, es otra Neda en territorio europeo, que se cree màs civilizado. Otra vìctima inocente de una lucha que no tiene sentido y cuyo eco no sale de las fronteras de España; quizàs porque son demasiadas las catàstrofes mundiales, quizàs porque a pocos nos importa, quizàs porque a quièn le importan no tiene suficiente voz para hacerse oir.

Apparently the Net Control System is Nokia and Siemens join venture product, but the two big Network companies are now publishing a blog with a few articles in deny with the news.

If they can cover the net, let's pretend that the information is true, Iran will also cover research on Nuclear Weapons development, casualties during the revolt.
If this stuff is true the end of the revolt is kinda close.

Access to internet is strictly limited, and does not allow for many reports.
Please, please, any help is appreciated in terms of software and/or technological development, in order to help the people bypass all the filters and report on the situation.

Project Kaisei - Catch the Trash!

Project Kaisei consists of a team of innovators, scientists, environmentalists, ocean lovers, sailors, and sports enthusiasts who have come together with a common purpose. To study how to capture marine debris in the North Pacific Gyre and to study retrieval and processing techniques that could be potentially employed to detoxify and recycle these materials into diesel fuel. This first research Mission, scheduled for the summer of 2009, will be critical to understanding the logistics that would be needed to launch future clean-up operations and testing existing technologies that have never been utilized under oceanic conditions.

Project Kaisei will examine the largest area of the Plastic Vortex, an ocean gyre, situated to the North East of Hawaii, and approximately five days by boat from the States (San Francisco area). The Mission will consist of a large pass through the Plastic Vortex, with the aim to collect plastic and other debris samples from the ocean in order to showcase some of the new technologies that will be used for processing and recycling.

Mousavi was also a lead contact Imad Mughniyah, the alleged brain child behind the barracks bombing. As you look at it you can deeply feel the experience of an historical moment, big crowds, guns and fifteen minute heroes. Flags, deaths, ideas.
Neda made all of us feel the "Tienanmen experience", she died and became an icon, the gun that shot her shot us all. I believe every single one of you watching that video felt shame and horror and rage.
The same day she was shot the whole entire world and even Barack Obama were with her.
Her death found support, sympathy and love for the cause she was supporting.
All eyes on Teheran. Iran must be saved.
Neda didn't die in vain.

While the attention was all over Iran another event was brought to the public attention by the news industry.
On the 26th of May 2009 Petru Birladeanu, a romanian musician, a football player, actually, was shot in Naples at the Montestanto metro station. He was a casualty of the Camorra people, who shot. Actually, they were meant to kill some other "target" some other enemy of their clan for the territory dispute.

The news about Petru were released in the mid-june period, nearly one month after his death and just because the La Repubblica (Italian newspaper ndr) website published some security camera footage of what happened. (Romanian musician killed by camorra - security video violent content)
Nobody showed any kind of sympathy for Petru's death, even in the video. His wife was scereaming at the top of her lungs and none of the people in the station stopped, they just wanted to be out of it.
Petru was bleeding on the floor.
Naples is still bleeding on the floor.
Now that Gomorra is just something to have on our bookshelves, now that we think about the Camorra wars as a movie, something far away, we can look somewhere else pityingly and cry for Iran and Neda.
We don't realise that we have a civil war in the middle of Europe, as Saviano was writing in his Gomorra investigation, the number of Camorra's war victims is 3.600 people since 1979.
No heroes, no flags, no ideas, no sympathy.
Petru is one of the last innocent people that died in the Bella-Napoli conflict and he should be part of the "Tienanmen experience".
I want people to stop and cry for him and scream for vengeance as Neda's friends on Teheran's concrete.
I want bloggers to write about a non-resolved conflict in the south of Italy.
I want people to care at least about a human life as they cared about Neda's icon.

We have to emancipate from media's hypocrisy.

Neda was not a casualty.

I personally felt the need to talk about what is happening in Teheran, since I just saw some footage of a really touching event.
The content is extremely violent, and i really struggle to type about it.
A girl got killed on Saturday 20th June 2009, a regular Saturday for me, for most of us in Europe, US, and Oceania. Her name was Neda.
Neda was a regular girl, a girl i could have met in a square wherever in the world. I just saw her bleeding, her eyes spreading wide while she was exhaling her last breath. Shot like a rabbit by one of the policemen fighting the demonstrants against Ahmadinejad's government.
I will not link the video from Youtube on our blog, we decided not to incourage vouyersim on such a tragic matter. If you guys want to watch it just go on Youtube and find it. I can tell you it ain't going to be pretty.

We just want to spend a moment and think about this young girl fighting for her country and falling dead the same day together with 19 other demonstrants.
On both Facebook and YouTube, the video comes with this explanation, written by someone who says that he was present when this video was shot and describes what it shows:

The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them, towards Salehi St. The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know.

Los Guardianes de la Revolución emitieron su primer comunicado desde que se celebraron las elecciones el pasado viernes, en el que exigen a todos los sitios de Internet y blogueros que eliminen de sus páginas cualquier contenido que "cree tensión". Quienes intenten burlar la orden deberán enfrentarse a acciones legales. Green Bikes for Peace

The Green Bikes for Peace project is a 30-day-long biking tour crossing 5 countries, with youth participating. The aim of the trip is to draw attention to sustainability.

Between June 19 and July 19 2009, 25 youths will cycle through 5 countries and 11 cities from Trieste to Ljubljana, then from Linz to Pécs.

The task of the youths participating at the tour selected by the partner organisations is to explore Europe now without borders, comparing it to the unified Roman Empire two thousand years ago.

The main objective of the project is to actively include youths from the cities concerned and a real dialogue could be established how they see the world and their environment. Therefore during the tour workshops and cultural events are organised (e.g. concerts, expos, statue inauguration ceremonies, etc.) with the cooperation of local NGOs, municipalities and companies.

Iran doesn't like Ahmadinejad Extremism.

Yesterday afternoon I was walking in the streets of Milan, and i just bumped in the most paceful and genuine demonstration in the Duomo Piazza.
Iranian people, guys and girls, were simply singing against the Ahmadinejad government and the rigged elections in their country.
I asked a couple of them what was going on, they told me in the most precise and polite way that seven people got killed the same day in Teheran in a pro Mussavi protest and they felt the need to stand up for Iran rights.
On their placards these simple words: WHERE IS MY VOTE!

El juicio contra las dos periodistas estadounidenses de origen asiático, Euna Lee y Laura Ling, que trabajan para el medio de Internet de San Francisco (EE UU) Current TV, se desarrolló del 4 al 8 de junio en Pyongyang.
"El juicio ha confirmado el grave delito que cometieron contra la nación coreana y su paso ilegal de la frontera", por lo que cada una de ellas ha sido sentenciada a 12 años de internamiento en campos de trabajo norcoreanos.

Desde el pasado 4 de junio el máximo tribunal de Corea del Norte juzgaba bajo acusación de "actos hostiles" y "entrada ilegal" en el territorio a las dos informadoras. Ambas periodistas fueron detenidas el 17 de marzo en la frontera de Corea del Norte con China mientras grababan unas imágenes sobre el tráfico de mujeres refugiadas norcoreanas.
Las dos periodistas han mantenido contactos por carta y uno solo telefónico con sus familias durante los meses que han permanecido bajo custodia de las autoridades norcoreanas en Pyongyang.

So this is it, North Korea is willing to pump up their nukes, great, wonderful, awesome;
The irony of all this is that North Korea entered the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1968, but suddenly dropped out in 2003.

On the 25th of May 2009 the missiles charged with hydrogen power are flying again in the eastern sky, test flights on and on, and here in the west we're still thinking "Oh! that's so horrible, oh, naughty naughty North Koreans! Why in the world would they do that!"

We are not asking ourselves the correct question: As I am writing this article, all the countries that signed the 1968 Treaty are still equipped with nuclear missiles. No wonder the Pyongyang dictatorship feels legitimated to research nukes if the threat of a nuclear war with the US is still out there, real and ready to happen.

The news program critics are incredibly opposed to the nuke tests in North Korea, they condemn Pyongyang’s appalling attitude, but nobody mentions that France, the US, India, Pakistan, Israel, China and Russia still have plenty of nuclear devices. I won’t bother writing all of them here but check this list out and scream if you want: Wikipedia list of nuclear weapons on earth
Do you get the issue here?
Pyongyang is not the main problem.
The main problem is the existing number of nuclear arms on the planet and the fear populations have towards one another.

It's just ridiculous that in an era of global communication and exchange of information, governments feel the need to have weapons of mass destruction. Governments should come together and decide that to best protect their nation they must throw the enormous amount of nuclear crap away from earth and try to figure something out together!

Alternative communication does make a difference.

On the 26th of May, just two days ago some people popped by the studios of Radio 105 in Milan to make a stand for the rights of the people who are experiencing the so called Forgotten Emergencies. The demonstration was organised by Medicins sans Frontiers to capture the sensitivity of the audience of the radio show "Lo Zoo".

The topic of discussion at "Lo Zoo" was incidentally the lack of seriety in everyday news programs;
Just one minute before the White Army crew arrived the radio hosts were discussing the "importance" of Carla Bruni in French politics or the "magnificent" new speedos of Fabrizio Corona. These issues are the main topics of Italy's broadcasted news rather than serious international and social matters like the crisis in Mynmar or the ever existing food and disease emergencies in Africa.
The Flash Mob pointed out that in today's news culture we prefer to hear or watch stories about superficial celebrity lives instead of being confronted with real and precise issues which could be resolved if only we knew about them or cared about them. The hosts of "Lo Zoo" interviewed Paola was one of the representatives of MSF, who explained the reason of the demonstration and the 10 forgotten emergencies which inspired this protest. None of these emergencies were discussed on the TV or the Radio in the last two and a half months, and, thanks to the White Army Flash Mob, were finally spoken about for the public to hear.

ECO-FRIENDLY BILLBOARD IN TIMES SQUARE

The first eco-friendly billboard is coming to Times Square, entirely powered by the sun and the wind — but there is one small catch.

When there’s no sun, and no wind? The $3 million billboard goes dark: there is no backup generator.

“We think if that happens, it’s just fine,” said Ron Potesky, a senior marketing vice president for Ricoh Americas Corporation, the office equipment and document-storage supplier that owns the sign.

The billboard — traditionally called a “spectacular” on the Great White Way — weighs in at 35,000 pounds. It will be 55 feet off the ground at 3 Times Square, wrapping around the northwest corner of Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street.

Fitted with 16 wind turbines and 64 solar panels, the sign will be “a first for Times Square,” said Barry E. Winston, a Times Square billboard consultant not involved in the Ricoh project, who has been a sign expert for more than 50 years.

Wind turbines for the vast sign, which is 126 feet wide and 47 feet high, have arrived in a warehouse in Deer Park, N.Y., where preliminary testing is being done. Construction will begin this month, for a lighting ceremony on Dec. 4.

Ricoh would not say how much it was paying for its three-year lease, but based on recent deals, the lease would most likely cost in the low six figures, as much as $200,000 a month, according to sign rental experts who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are contractually forbidden to make public statements.

Such a cost would not be unusual for a sign across the avenue from 1 Times Square, where the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

By generating its own electricity — enough to light six homes for a year — the sign could save as much as $12,000 to $15,000 per month, according to Ricoh, which estimated that the sign would prevent 18 tons of carbon from being spewed into the air yearly.

The “passive” sign is not studded with light-emitting diodes like so many others in Times Square, but will be lighted by 16 300-watt floodlights. It will feature custom-printed opaque vinyl sheeting bearing the red-and-white Ricoh logo. The sign will be green, nevertheless, a message “to customers, other companies and the world that resources and energy can be used creatively,” Mr. Potesky said. “The point is that there are ways of being environmentally friendly to the planet, even on a billboard.”

Unlike the tall propellers in a typical wind farm, the cylindrical Ricoh drum turbines have no sharp blades. They will provide 90 percent of the sign’s power; the rest will come from the solar panels on the sign, feeding electricity to eight collection batteries up in the sign. The drums are so perfectly balanced, Ricoh says, that their rotors could be turned by the wind from a single household electric fan.

Mr. Potesky said the turbines would most likely generate enough power to keep the sign lighted even after four days without wind or sun. But the company is prepared for the sign to go dark. Mr. Potesky said the only other such sign in the world is one Ricoh put up in 2003 in Osaka, Japan, “using somewhat less advanced technology,” he said, referring to its 26 small propellers and 39 solar panels.

“On dark and rainy days, that sign went dark during the night,” he said.

Passers-by will be able to see the 26 blades spinning in each of the sign’s 16 turbine drums, piled in four 45-foot-high vertical stacks. When operating at their average speed of 10 miles an hour, they put out 22 kilowatts.

Stalklike propeller turbines require unidirectional, or “clean,” wind to function. But the revolving drums on the Ricoh sign can use turbulent, multidirectional winds common to Midtown, said Mary S. Watkins, chief executive of PacWind Inc. in Torrance, Calif., which makes the custom turbine arrays.

PacWind studied meteorological records and did a wind analysis, she said, determining that Times Square has 10-mile-an-hour winds, on average, ranging from no wind to gusts of 85 m.p.h. The turbines provide usable power from winds as weak as 5 m.p.h. and rotate safely in winds up to 100 m.p.h., she said, because the aluminum blades are aerodynamically designed to regulate themselves, slowing automatically in high winds.

The company has designed wind turbines for applications ranging from the sublime to the seemingly ridiculous — including a turbine created for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to capture 400-mile-an-hour winds for a lander on Mars, and a turbine that powers the 20,000-square-foot garage of Jay Leno in Los Angeles.

Ms. Watkins said the Times Square turbines were designed to keep ice from forming on the blades in winter. Birds have not proved to be a problem as the company has installed 50 of its drum turbines across the country, she said, “because they see the turbines not as spinning blades, but as a solid object.”
